Full Job Description

Do you have a flexible approach to shifts, and are willing to cover additional shifts on overtime as required and on occasions at short notice?, Reporting to the Deputy Facilities manager, you will be part of the security team to ensure we provide an effective 24/7 professional security service for our staff, tenants, contractors, and visitors from around the UK and the world.

The role will involve front of house duties, processing, visitors' contractors and contacting site hosts.

You will also carry out regular patrolling of the site and external buildings on foot and in the site security vehicle.

Role Responsibilities

The primary duties will include:

  • Championing the Estates service in a positive manner.

  • Providing an effective 24/7 security service to staff, tenants, contractors and visitors to the site.

  • Carrying out regular security patrols of the site and premises, on foot or in site security vehicle.

  • Promote a security culture across the site to staff, tenants, visitors and contractors.

  • Checking of Site passes and identity cards.

  • Monitoring activity outside and inside premises through observation and closed-circuit television.

  • Recording and monitoring of any suspicious activity and taking any necessary action.

  • Adhering to site policies and security standard operating procedures.

  • Ability to handle sensitive situations in a confidential manner.

  • Safeguarding classified/confidential information and materials, and adhere to GDPR protocols.

  • Conducting searches of vehicles or personnel if required.

  • Escorting of visitors and VIPs as required.

  • Providing directions and other relevant campus information to visitors and delivery drivers.

  • Record information of security incidents on computer systems and send to appropriate internal stakeholders.

  • Fulfilling Security and Health and Safety roles whilst patrolling; reporting safety, health and environment issues on computer systems.

  • Monitor out-of-hours lone working activity.

  • Contacting key staff in emergency situations.

  • Carry out initial action at scene of any incident if required, including first aid.

  • Coordinating emergencies in accordance with site emergency plan (both during work hours and out of hours)

  • Liaising and contacting emergency services in emergencies, as required.

  • Out-of-hours safety monitoring of critical scientific and engineering equipment as requested.

  • Responding to daytime and out-of-hours alarm activations.

  • Carrying out building opening and closing operations.

  • Ensure shift handover information is communicated to oncoming shifts appropriately.

  • Communicating relevant information to other security officers.

  • Control vehicle and pedestrian access and egress to and from site.

  • Coordinate and control vehicle movements and car parking during events.

  • Manual handling of barriers and cones as required.

  • Conducting general reception duties.

  • Answering and transferring of incoming and outgoing calls via telephone switchboard.

  • Issuing of door cards and resetting of locks.

  • Ensuring contractors complete the site safety induction test prior to going on site.

  • Issue and receipt of keys and passes.

  • Management of key signing in and out documentation.

  • Booking of taxis as required.

  • Assisting with weekly fire alarm testing.

  • Carry out site PA (Tannoy) announcements as required.

  • Daily radio checks, recording and updating of the site emergency contacts board.

  • Assist with site post and logistics duties as required, checking for suspicious packages.

  • Undertake annual shift working medical.

  • Attend all in house/external job-related mandatory training as required.

  • Shift cover staff holidays as required.

  • Cover additional shifts at short notice for unexpected staff sickness absences.

  • Assist management with any other reasonable requests.

    Essential:

  • GCSE-level education

  • Full UK driving licence

  • Previous experience in similar security role

  • Previous experience with working 12-hour shift patterns

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Flexible attitude and ability to work additional shifts as required at short notice.


  • Desirable:
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook systems.

  • Good level of health and safety awareness.

  • Good level of fitness.

  • Evidence of working in a team environment.

  • First aid trained

  • The ability to work with technical equipment.

  • NVQ Level 2 Certificate in Security or equivalent.

  • Experience of monitoring CCTV systems.

  • Security Industry Authority (SIA) Level 2 Qualification in CCTV Operations.
