This role is to join our Engineering Enablement department who are a vital part of this strategy, providing platform and organisational capabilities that let all BBC engineering teams develop and build efficient, reliable, sustainable services fast, and foster a community that helps constantly improve organisational practices and results.

The Engineering Enablement teams are
responsible for simplifying AWS account management, easing application deployments through a common deployment platform, whilst providing health and security viewpoints to multiple levels of the organisation.

We are growing the number of teams supporting this critical platform underpinning the BBC. You have the opportunity to create a brand-new team from scratch. Leading the recruitment, shaping the culture and practices, helping them develop and integrate with our existing teams. Our engineers receive 10% development time built into the 35 hour working week. We want to give you the time and space to stay fresh in the ever-changing technology landscape., This is a hybrid role, mixing managing your teams capacity, setting the direction, supporting their careers and collaborating with your technical knowledge.

  • Lead your team in the design, development, and operation of effective software.

  • Leading your team in defining your approaches to operational stability, quality, and testing.

  • Ensure that the team's technical product documentation is always complete, accurate and coherent.


  • Over the next couple of years some key projects you could be involved with are:
  • Development of tools to identify risks and automate vulnerability patching in the cloud accounts and exposure of these via a centralised online portal.

  • Creation of BBC tailored cloud native base Linux OS images for different architectures for use across the organisation.

  • Tooling that enables CI/CD and encourages cloud best practices.

    A two hour interview made up of two parts will be conducted to evaluate your suitability for this role:

  • A 55min technical presentation and discussion.

  • A 10 min break.

  • A 55min competency based interview around leadership and management., Experience of leadership

  • Experienced Team Lead with experience of supporting

  • Software Engineering teams
  • Recruitment, line management and mentoring experience.

  • Establishing and promoting best practices within teams. (Agile and collaborative software development)

  • Committed to growing and hiring a diverse engineering team.


  • Technical Stack & Experience
  • Cloud Expertise: Experience with cloud technologies (preferably AWS) for infrastructure setup, software deployments, operational monitoring

  • Software Development: Experience of guiding technical direction of a complex system, considering both short-term and long-term effects of decisions.

  • Non-Functional Requirements: Exposure to non-functional requirements such as monitoring, observability, and maintainability (through readable code and documentation).

  • Deployment Automation: Experience and understanding of creating and maintaining automated pipelines for deployment to production.
