Full Job Description

The Special Collections Division of the main University Library is looking for an enthusiastic, responsible and user-focused person to join its dedicated and friendly reading room teams, working on Mondays, and Wednesday to Friday (29.2 hours).

As a Special Collections User Services Assistant, you will play a key role in the smooth running of our services to users, particularly our reading rooms. You will be mainly responsible for fetching and reshelving highly valuable and fragile physical items, handling everything with great care. You will ensure that security procedures are followed at all times in the secure storage areas and the reading rooms. You will provide a friendly and welcoming service for our researchers who come from all over the world to consult our collections, ensuring that they are made aware of and follow procedures and answering basic queries.

You should have good communication and customer service skills and be able to work co-operatively as part of a team. You should be flexible and motivated and keen to learn new skills. Given the nature of the job, it's important that you are able to carry out repetitive tasks accurately, such as recording and organising data, and be able to demonstrate attention to detail.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 28 February 2025 in the first instance.

Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University for which permission must be sought from their line manager.

We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part-time working or other flexible working arrangements.
