Full Job Description

We are seeking someone friendly, engaging with a great sense of good customer service ideally with good basic wine knowledge and some experience in the trade OR if not someone who has a can-do attitude and a genuine interest in learning about the products we offer and the overall trade to join a dynamic growing business. Part of a small team, this is a position with plenty of potential for the right candidate to develop their own knowledge and skills whilst contributing to the success of the shops and development of the business as a whole.

Responsibilities:

o Serving and advising customers on wine, beers and spirits

o Maintaining customer relationships and building new ones.

o Managing all aspects of the shop including opening /closing routine; cashing up, key holder responsibility.

o Assisting with deliveries incoming / outgoing including manual handling of stock

o Overall responsibility for the presentation of the shop; from maintaining stock levels on the shelves to keeping it clean & safe

o Assisting in selecting new products for the shop & range development

o Contributing to social media and product reviewing aspects of the business

o Assisting at public tastings

You will be friendly, engaging and interested, Customer service is a priority to you and each customer is different. Ideally you have some wine and beer knowledge and experience in the industry or a keen interest in learning and looking to carve out a career in the trade. We are looking for a new colleague who is enthusiastic about helping customers find the right bottle, who will take great pride in their work, using their initiative to ensure the shop presentation is the best it can be.

knowledge of Wine / Beer / Spirits is beneficial but not essential

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Have a positive can-do attitude and are willing to get involved.

  • Be a team player

  • You are reliable and a good timekeeper

  • Friendly, helpful, confident and engaging personality

  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills

  • Have a desire to learn more about wine, beer and spirits in order to share this knowledge with our customers.

  • Previous experience in the retail or hospitality beneficial but not essential.

  • Experience:
  • hospitality: 1 year (preferred)

  • Retail sales: 1 year (preferred)

    The Bottle Shop is an independent Wine, Beer & Spirits merchant with 3 stores based in the suburbs of Roath, Pontcanna and the town of Penarth. Since opening in 2011 the range has grown to offer over 400 different wines, 300+ craft and world beers and a large range of spirits.


  • The main business is based around public facing retail sales in our shop and wines by the glass to customers on the premises, although we do also supply trade customers and organise and run a variety of tasting events.

    We pride ourselves on providing approachable, friendly and knowledgeable customer service and try to use our strengths as an independent to bring the most interesting bottles to our customers.

  • Hours:

    35hrs per week. The hours will involve evenings and weekends as this is our busiest time. After initial training period some hours will be worked alone.

  • covid has caused changes to our "usual" trading times, we are currently operating shorter hours, however we will return to trading somewhere within the following.


  • Tue - Sun 12am to 9pm

    We do have seasonal variations December being our busiest time with staff required to work up until the 24th . With a shut down early January. There may be changes to working hours at a future date. You will be on a staff rota, and we try and make sure that staff do get time off on weekends where possible.,
